Name something you are proud of today.
Somewhere over the years, you’ve gotten away from sharing how you are proud of yourself because of the judgment from other people. But let’s be honest life isn’t exactly a cakewalk.
I know for myself it’s been a challenge stating the things I am proud of simply because for a long time I operated in the state of “gotta do what ya gotta do, so I did” but now years after a lot of healing, I realized that some things aren’t as easy as I may have made them out to be. In fact, they are quite challenging when you think about them.
Let’s start with navigating life in a country where I have no family ties. I’m first generation immigrant and I pretty much had no one to support me or count on when I needed it. It’s not been easy but I also know due to my trauma, I didn’t and often still don’t trust people to be dependable.
I also went to college online for consecutive 8 years – 3 of which were mostly spent in the hospital as my son was fighting for his life following his first 2 liver transplants. He was in ICU for 3 months or so and I would sit next to him and study. I only have one class not get an A – which would have meant a 4.0 GPA – but yeah, I’m proud of that.
As my children are now all adults, I am proud that I raised some amazing dudes. While they had their own struggles, one of the things I see is that they stand up for what they believe in – even if I don’t always agree – and that was the point. For them to create their own life however they wanted. I don’t have to or need to approve any of it – my job is to love them. But as someone who didn’t have what I was and am able to give my kids, I’d say that’s a moment to be proud of.
I think acknowledging the things you worked hard for is important because sometimes when things are a bit challenging it’s easy to overlook where you’ve been!
